The IDP PMPE stands out for its high degree of social insertion in various spheres of society. This insertion is manifested in numerous research and extension activities carried out by the Program over the years 2019 and 2020. The main example of the economic and social impact of the PMPE consists of the content of the master's dissertations developed, always prioritizing a practical application, which solve a specific socio-economic problem. In this way, students and graduates are directed towards a strong participation in society, acting in the public debate and aiming at the economic development of the country.

This economic, social and cultural impact of the PMPE is especially highlighted by the fact that the students are almost always professionals with relevant work in public bodies or private sector entities with a close relationship with the public sector. Thus, the knowledge acquired in the PMPE overflows into a direct and rapid impact on the institutions in which they operate. As previously described, PPI students work in public banks, federal government ministries, state secretaries, regulatory agencies, CADE, among other important institutions.

Another example that shows the economic and social impact of the Program is the training courses that are free and open to society.

Below, we briefly explain the two most important training initiatives for society carried out by PMPE during the program's biennium.

OPEN SPACE

In 2019, IDP’s Professional Master’s Program in Economics, in partnership with the institution’s Master’s Program in Public Administration, launched the “Espaço Aberto IDP”, which aimed to offer free mini-courses open to the public in the areas of public administration. , economics and law.

In the first year of the project, between September and November 2019, 10 (ten) weekly mini-courses were held, held in person at the IDP on Wednesdays. All courses were 100% free and open to the public. The courses were mostly taught by professors from the Professional Master's programs in Economics and Public Administration at IDP. In 2019, the following PMPE teachers participated in the initiative: Sérgio Jurandyr Machado, Leonardo Monteiro Monastério, Guilherme Mendes Resende and Pedro Fernando Nery.

In all, there were more than 2 thousand subscribers, and the event page was accessed almost 17 thousand times over the 10 weeks in which the course was held (between September and November 2019).

To increase the visibility and effectiveness of the dissemination of knowledge provided by the initiative, IDP recorded and made all meetings available online on the website created for the project (http://espacoaberto.idp.edu.br/).http://espacoaberto.idp.edu.br).

In the second phase of the project, carried out in the 1st half of 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the first mini-courses of the Espaço Aberto IDP were offered in online broadcasts, always publicly and free of charge. In this phase, a total of 12 courses were offered, with the participation of PMPE coordinator José Luiz Rossi Júnior and Carlos Eduardo Gasparini, for example.

In the Espaço Aberto IDP courses in 2020, emphasis was given to the impacts of the pandemic on the Brazilian economy. The emergence of this theme, whose effects were felt on a global scale, was part of the agenda of the Professional Master's Program in Economics at the IDP, which, through the public and free offer of mini-courses, sought to offer subsidies for the deepening of the debate around the implications political and economic consequences that the pandemic has caused in Brazil. So far, there have been almost 3,000 views on YouTube of the courses taught at Espaço Aberto IDP.

Open Class

In the 2nd semester of 2020, motivated by the success of the Espaço Aberto Project and by the perception of the importance that an educational institution has to play in a context of serious health, economic and social crisis, the PPG decided to expand the Espaço Aberto project. The “Open Class Project” was then created, which differs from its predecessor in three important characteristics: i) the courses offered are of medium duration (on average, 10 hours per course); ii) the project was extended to other areas of the IDP, especially to the areas of communication and law; iii) for some courses, professors from outside the IDP were invited. However, two fundamental characteristics were maintained: the courses continued to be totally open to society and 100% free.

In the face of the recession, uncertainty and paralysis of several essential activities, the Open Class Project was an innovative way that PPG found to contribute directly to society, by offering high quality scientific content on various topics related to the economy, public management, communication and law.

Despite all the adversities caused by the new Coronavirus pandemic, the “Open Class” was, therefore, an opportunity to expand access to free courses unprecedented in the history of IDP to students from all over Brazil, through online classes. The project has proved to be an unprecedented success. The economics and management courses alone, organized by the PMPE in partnership with the PPG in Public Administration of the IDP, brought together around 19,000 live participants in 2020. There are more than 16,000 class hours, distributed across 128 classes and with approximately 80 teachers involved. The course is evaluated with 86% approval/satisfaction from the participating public. The project has sought to include in its agenda several relevant, contemporary and current themes, related, for example, to social inclusion (such as the Diversity, Inclusion and Public Policies and Citizenship Basic Income courses) and gender inclusion (such as the Women and Leadership, which had more than 1,200 subscribers).

Laboratory of Evaluation & Innovation in Public Policies (LAIPP)

During the biennium, the PPG launched the Laboratory for Assessment & Innovation in Public Policies (LAIPP - https://www.idp.edu.br/laipp/) as a pioneer in the country. LAIPP's strategic objective is to form a large network of researchers from various institutions in Brazil, building a collaborative environment whose potential impact is to make public managers aware of the impacts found in experiments published in the most renowned international scientific journals. https://www.idp.edu.br/laipp). O LAIPP tem como objetivo estratégico formar uma grande rede de pesquisadores de diversas instituições do Brasil, construindo um ambiente colaborativo cujo impacto potencial é fazer chegar aos gestores públicos o conhecimento dos impactos encontrados em experimentos publicados nos mais conceituados journals científicos internacionais.

LAIPP starts from a diagnosis: much of the scientific knowledge, particularly in the evaluation of public policies, does not have an effective influence on the design and redesign of public policies in the country due to the difficulty of public managers to access this knowledge. There are several potential obstacles: the complexity of statistical and econometric models, the plurality of journals in which these works are published, knowledge of foreign languages, among others.

In order to fill the gap between the knowledge generated through scientifically rigorous public policy evaluations and the knowledge used to implement public policies and social programs in the country, the LAIPP network of researchers seeks to synthesize, in clear, accessible and intuitive language, articles scientific studies that sought to evaluate policies and programs in Brazil and abroad. The main objective of the LAIPP is, therefore, to assist public management professionals in decision-making through the dissemination of scientific knowledge about public policies in language that is easily assimilated by the broad public. Inspired by initiatives such as the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), LAIPP has served the fundamental purpose of connecting evidence from rigorous academic studies with decision-making by public officials in Brazilian public administration.

LAIPP products include articles with summaries of findings from empirical studies published in high-impact academic journals. These articles are written in accessible language by economists and researchers specializing in empirical studies. With its own network of researchers, the initiative synthesizes, in clear, accessible and intuitive language, works and evaluations of public policies in the most diverse areas of knowledge, carried out in Brazil and in the world. Following a planned method, each publication details and explains the main scientific findings in each article, in order to reduce or eliminate the obstacles inherent in reading research with a high level of complexity. Thus, it is expected to reduce the distance between academic debates and the understanding of society as a whole.

An important aspect adopted by the PPG to increase its social impact was to increase the supply of free knowledge to society. We saw how this aspect translated into the offer of several open and 100% free training courses. Another initiative along the same lines was the launch of podcasts.

Podcasts

Vimos como essa vertente se traduziu na oferta de diversos cursos de capacitação abertos e 100% gratuitos. Outra iniciativa nesse mesmo sentido foi o lançamento de podcasts.

The IDP podcast project was launched by IDP's Professional Master's in Economics program. The first podcast launched under the project was “Economisto”, aimed directly at the areas of public administration and economics. Conducted by NDP Pedro Nery and aims to discuss topics related to the economy and public policies. In the first season, the theme was inequality. Academics, jurists and opinion makers talk about how to build a fairer country. Currently, the podcast has more than 30 episodes and an average of more than 1,500 listeners per week. Another Podcast launched by the program was Ctrl+Enter. Led by NDP Leonardo Monteiro Monastério, the Podcast addresses the sharing of strategies and challenges about using data in research with the best professionals from the private sector, government, NGOs and academia about the pains and delights of working with data today. So far, 14 episodes have been aired, covering the most diverse themes and with the participation of renowned national and international researchers.

REGEN Journal of Management, Economics and Business

Fulfilling one of the most relevant aspects, the PPG launched, in 2020, the REGEN Revista de Gestão, Economia e Negócios. With biannual publications and a wide scope involving economics, administration, finance, public management and other topics related to Applied Social Sciences, the first two editions were launched in 2020 and the journal has ISSN 2676-0185. The expectation is to gradually observe a better classification in the Qualis strata. The journal bears the name Revista de Gestão, Economia e Negócios, the same name as the School that brings together IDP's professional programs in Economics and Public Administration.

The Empirical Economics Bulletin

In early 2020, the Empirical Economics Bulletin was created, which is the official journal of the Research Group on Empirical Economics. Under ISSN 2675-3391, the publication has a bimonthly frequency and has established itself as an important space for debate and discussions on the economic agenda and the Brazilian public administration through articles, texts for discussion and technical opinions that evidence the professional character of the Programs in Economics. and in Public Administration. Some students and graduates of the Public Administration Program published unpublished texts in this journal, which has been successfully disseminating the bibliographic and technical production of the professional programs of Economics and Public Administration of the IDP, in addition to external scientific production.
