Choosing at the age of 17 which career you want to pursue can be a big challenge! In addition to being in a phase full of changes, in general, young people in this age group have little experience and experience that allows them to choose with confidence.
With this in mind, we made a list of 5 steps to facilitate this process and help you decide which degree to pursue!
1) Know yourself
The first step is to explore your interests and skills. Analyze your strengths, think about what you like to do and what you usually get praised for. Also consider your life goals and values: what is important to you? What lifestyle do you like? From these answers, you will have several important information for your decision process.
2) Try to find out more about the day-to-day life of the profession
To know if you will be happy (because that's what matters, right?) with your future professional routine, it is important to check what the possible areas of activity are, considering your personal skills, and what their routine is like.
In addition to taking into account aspects such as: "is this a job in which it is necessary to work in a team or individually?", "what are the processes?", it is also interesting to know whether it is performed in a more formal office or not, for example. Even the type of clothing required to practice this profession must be taken into consideration. Although they may seem like details, some of these questions may not be compatible with your personality and, therefore, it is important to consider them.
3) Talk to people who work in this area
After observing and researching the professions that catch your attention, the next step is to talk to those who are already there! There is nothing better than listening to someone who has already gone through this moment of choice and now lives the reality of the profession to learn a little about the challenges and opportunities in the area. Knowing more about the trajectory, especially from people you admire, can be a good way to get inspired and make sure you really identify with such a career! In addition to helping to set goals and dreams, right? A little inspiration always goes a long way.
4) Consider your opinion
Advice and experiences are always welcome and can help you look at it from a different point of view, as well as giving you perspectives from people who have already been through several of the paths you will still follow. However, the opinion that must prevail is yours. Therefore, listen carefully to advice and opinions, try to understand each one of them and the different reasons, but make a decision taking, above all, your wishes into consideration.
5) Look for experiences that bring you closer to the area!
Getting in touch with the subjects and experiences that will be part of your professional reality is a great opportunity to take a test drive before making a decision. Therefore, following a day of work with a professional you know, taking short courses on related subjects or even starting as a minor apprentice in a company, are ways to better understand the universe of a given profession before making a decision.
With this in mind, IDP created the Pre-College Winter Camp: 100% online courses in which the student will have a deep and interactive immersion in some of the topics covered in undergraduate courses.
