IDP launches research group with lecture by Professor Dr. Marion Albers, from the University of Hamburg
On the morning of Thursday, 05.09, Professor Dr. Marion Albers of the University of Hamburg gave a lecture on the European Personal Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the prospects and challenges to deal with algorithms and artificial intelligence.
In her speech, Professor Marion highlighted the growing difficulty of differentiating between personal data and non-personal data, highlighting the importance of rethinking such categorizations in light of the new possibilities for using and processing data provided by technology. The European rules relating to the right of access to information, the right to review automated decisions and the right to explanation of algorithmic decisions were covered in detail, explaining the concrete difficulties in exercising such rights in light of the technological dynamics itself. and the interpretation given to them by the Judiciary. Specifically with regard to decisions made by algorithms, the importance of adding additional rules based on the principle of "accountability" to existing individual rights was discussed, taking into account the procedural dimension of protecting personal data. Finally, Professor Marion Albers discussed the idea of creating independent supervisory authorities specifically focused on Artificial Intelligence.
The lecture also marked the beginning of the activities of the IDP Personal Data Protection Research Group, under the leadership of professors Laura Schertel, Danilo Doneda and Miriam Wimmer. The Research Group will meet monthly, will feature lectures from professors specializing in the topic and will provide an opportunity for debate and academic deepening on different aspects of personal data protection in Brazil and around the world.
