Text prepared by Journalism student Emanuelle Leones, student of the IDP Journalism course.
First of all, welcome to the first text in our column! I really hope you enjoy our comfortable little corner of trying to understand politics a little better and, above all, the politics of our country, which is, to say the least… intriguing. The intention here is to create a space where everyone can understand the subject in the lightest and most relaxed way possible, it is already too complicated to be Brazilian.
Now yes, speaking of being Brazilian, the subject I wanted to bring up in our first post was not this, but which other species has the privilege of waking up suddenly, with the dear Braga Neto celebrating a military regime, followed by demonstrations calling for a military regime. military again, if not the Brazilian, right?
Given this, let's talk here about a very important thing for all of us, human beings who inhabit planet Earth, that's right, Human Rights . Do you know what Human Rights are? Where did they come from? What are they for? Find out right now, at Politize-se.
Human rights are literally the rights that all human beings have, simply for being human. Men, women, children, elderly people, etc. Everyone has exactly the same rights.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But Mannu, even the column writers?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes, my dear friend, even these. But let's go back in time a little, I'll tell you from the beginning.
As you can imagine, in the beginning, human rights did not exist, it was basically everyone for themselves, trying to survive in the best way possible and creating their own laws and morals, following what seemed most convenient to them. Also, as you can imagine, things didn't work out very well, seeing all this, a man called Ciro, the Great (unfortunately I can't say if he was actually a big man or 1.50 tall and the name was an irony) decided that things were that bad and decided to change the situation.
Cyrus then conquered Babylon and announced that all slaves would be free, that all people could choose their religions, regardless of the group they belonged to. (Which from my point of view, even today would be a revolutionary attitude, since we all know that this is not exactly how governments work in practice). His words were recorded on a cylinder, which was called the Cyrus Cylinder , hence Human Rights were born. The people, who are not stupid or anything, spread the gossip, the matter reached Greece, India and Rome.
People realized that everyone naturally followed some laws, which had not been declared or written anywhere and decided to give it a name, Natural Law . But, unfortunately not to our surprise, those in power were completely ignorant of these laws. Until one day in England, when they finally made the king see that the rights of the people should be untouchable, even by the highest authority, the king himself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ah Mannu, how beautiful, now that these rights have been recognized, no person in power has ignored this?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of course it passed. Before the king announced that he had recognized the people's rights, a group of British rebels declared independence, and that was where America was born, in other words, what we who study geography call the United States of America.
On the other side, the French also started their own revolution, for their own rights, they defended an idea similar to what I already told you here, rights were not invented by anyone, it was something natural to us, human beings, or That is, the Romans' concept of Natural Law became, Natural Rights .
As it is practically impossible to please everyone, in France, a guy we all know, called Napoleon, decided that French democracy was not cool, and went to put an end to that democracy, ambitious as he was, he declared himself emperor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Emperor of France Mannu?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No little grasshopper, from all over the world. I would say a visionary, with a mindset that coaches around the world would envy.
But our little Napoleon's plan didn't work, as European countries decided to get together and put the narcissistic guy on the wall. So, with Napoleon out of the house, the new leader Europe returned to discussing the rights of the people (I promise the reality show references are over), but not for the whole world, only for Europe, after all I never said that only Napoleon was a narcissist.
Instead of seeing people around the world as equals who deserved the same rights, Europe chose to look at the rest of the world as a territory to be discovered and conquered. We already know that a good story always has a revolution, in India there was a lawyer who decided to oppose it, Mahatma Gandhi . He declared that absolutely everyone on Earth had rights, until Europe itself agreed.
But I'm going to give you a spoiler directly from philosophy, as Nietzsche said: “Hope is the worst of evils, as it prolongs man's torment”. Two World Wars. Hitler exterminated thousands of people from the face of the Earth, 9 million people died in concentration camps, Human Rights became just a fairy tale story, forgotten on the shelf.
In this specific fairy tale, the one who helps save the people is a woman (hold this information a little longer), in the face of all this chaos and despair, the countries of our blue planet came together and formed the United Nations . All of these countries seemed to have a concept of what Human Rights would be, from the beginning in the Cyrus Cylinder to Natural Rights. The woman in question, who helped save the people, is Eleanor Roosevelt , she was responsible for supervising and together with all the nations forming the official document: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Corner of Thought

Now my dear friends, the reflection I leave here in our column (yes, it's ours, mine and yours, look how cool) is the following: humanity spent years and years, between revolutions, deaths and wars, to finally obtain a document which guarantees rights and dignity for all, a document that serves not only to declare our rights, but also to demand that they are met and hold those responsible accountable if they are not.
Why is there still the possibility of a debate to discuss whether a dictatorship is good or not? Why is humanity still debating whether a coup that killed innocent people, persecuted and censored artists, journalists and musicians and made these people afraid of living in their own country, was a “revolution” or not? Honestly, it is difficult to imagine that after so many fights and wars, there is still an extremely noisy group of Brazilians who defend a regime that violates Human Rights on numerous points.
Now, I, young Brazilian that I am, sympathize with you who are Brazilian too and I leave here a nice and relaxing video, with our absurdly good songs, to remind you that being Brazilian is not just panic and despair:
A kiss and a smell,
Mannu Leones.
