The world is different - there's no denying it. Social isolation, uncertainty and constant changes. In the blink of an eye, we had to change our routine, adapt our plans and learn to deal with an unusual level of unpredictability. Along the way, naturally, we looked for mechanisms to alleviate the feeling of distance and continue following what was happening around the planet.
And so, suddenly, cell phones became our window to the outside world. A device we use to work, study, communicate, secure supplies and have fun.
But calm down. We know that the last year was extremely atypical and transformed a large part of our lives. However, let's face it, when we talk about excessive use of the internet and social media, the warning sign has been going off for a while. The anxiety about not checking the news on Instagram, the controversies on Twitter, the memes in WhatsApp groups and the latest trend on Tik Tok is nothing new.
Does it seem distant? Let's see now.

UNCONSCIOUS USE
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever found yourself in a sudden moment of distraction, while working, studying or watching a movie, and the next thing you know, you have your cell phone in your hand, scrolling through your feed and have no idea how much time has passed? Or have you suddenly found yourself unconsciously navigating updates between one app and another?
We know that the situations described are not recent, nor are they rare. Technological acceleration has made it possible for us to carry, in the palm of our hands, a world of information and stimuli. The options have multiplied at a frightening speed and we now have access, almost in real time, to everything that happens around the world. At first, these changes may have seemed harmless. Today, however, we realize that they are not.

A DIFFERENT PROPOSAL
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
JOMO, Joy of Missing Out , emerged in opposition to the culture of excessive and continuous connectivity. The “joy in being left out”, in free translation, has grown as an alternative movement, which values the intentional search for an offline lifestyle, a more critical look at notions of toxic productivity and the development of deeper relationships between beings humans. Its proposal is to encourage people to be more aware of their own desires, interests and dreams. JOMO is about living in the here and now.
To help you build a lifestyle based on this philosophy, we have put together some tips for you:
- Limit the time you use social media ⏳
- Seek to connect with the present and open yourself to new experiences 🧘♀️
- Disable notifications on your cell phone 🔕
- Take time to reflect and write about your interests 📝
- Avoid using your cell phone right before bed 📴
At the end of the day, the goal of JOMO is to encourage people to disconnect from this edited, virtual reality and return to living real life. It's reinforcing that we are enough, that happiness can't be bought and that each journey is unique. It is a philosophy that seeks to regain our awareness of our value, develop greater emotional clarity and honor our history, mind and thoughts. And so, as much as it may seem like a distant possibility, remember: always be the possibility of living a different life.
